This October, Scopely marked a significant milestone, surpassing $7B in user spending. The majority of the revenue stemmed from MARVEL Strike Force: Squad RPG, constituting 17% of the total lifetime user spending. This was closely followed by Star Trek™ Fleet Command at 14% and Tiki Solitaire TriPeaks at 12%.
If you've observed the graph, there's a notable revenue surge in April 2023, coinciding with the successful debut of Monopoly Go. Currently, this game is maintaining its upward trajectory, accounting for a whopping 74% of monthly user spending. Impressively, it's racking up 12M downloads monthly.
Various studies have delved into the game's booming popularity. Here's a concise recap of likely success factors:
- Monopoly IP. Although other games, like Monopoly Tycoon by Nvizzio Creations and Monopoly Slots by SciPlay, have tried to leverage the renowned Monopoly board game IP, none have enjoyed such remarkable success as Monopoly Go. Thus, even though this iconic IP undoubtedly boosts organic traffic and brand recognition, there's definitely more to the story.
- Casual and Social Casino Blend. While the game retains classic Monopoly elements, it incorporates social casino features reminiscent of Coin Master, where players can snatch valuable items from their peers.
- Social Integration. Monopoly Go offers rich social features, like the “Community Chest” mode, sticker collections for trading, incentives for player referrals, and a timeline for tracking and retaliating against in-game theft.
- Content & Progression. Players journey through maps, building and upgrading structures. As they advance, these activities become pricier. Players can also access diverse content such as albums, daily treats, roll capacity, and sneak peeks of upcoming features.
- Gameplay Speedups. Players are given the chance to hasten the game by hitting a button that automates dice rolls. All intermediate windows, such as reward notifications or sticker pack unveilings, will also be opened automatically, barring building attacks and bank robberies which remain manually controlled. This allows users to skip repetitive tasks, accelerating progress and shifting focus towards more strategic endeavors.
- Monetization. The in-app monetization strategy ties to gameplay progression speed. Players might opt to purchase in-game currency for faster advancement or building upgrades. Time-sensitive bundle offers also present enticing opportunities for in-game purchases.
- Retention Strategy. Several features ensure player longevity. The core gameplay itself requires regular check-ins to prevent property damage and theft. Daily rewards, login prizes, notifications, and a sticker collection system further enhance player engagement.
- Live Ops. As we've highlighted in previous pieces, Live Ops boosts player engagement and retention. Scopely capitalizes on this, introducing weekly events and tournaments with attractive prizes.
Now, returning to Scopely's broader picture:
Geographically, the lion's share of Scopely's user spending hails from Tier-1 Western countries. The USA alone contributes 74%, followed by the UK (5%), Canada (4%), and Germany (4%). In terms of store distribution, 52% is from Google Play, while 48% is from the App Store.
A brief refresher: Scopely is an esteemed American interactive entertainment and gaming company. As of July 2023, it became a subsidiary of the Savvy Games Group.
